Cameron Family – 2013 Monsanto Cotton Grower of the Year

Now that the 2013 Australian Cotton Industry Awards were announced in Narrabri a couple of weeks ago, we would like to make special mention of the 2013 Monsanto Cotton grower of the Year, Dryland Cotton Growers – John and Ros Cameron.

The Cameron’s “Kintyre” family run dryland farm is located in Bongeen, 29km north-west of Pittsworth on Queensland’s Darling Downs.

John and his team recorded a record crop and as described to Cotton Australia, the season was one they will remember for a long time.

“The season started off with the usual amount of challenges – of just enough moisture to get a crop in the ground,” John said.

“(There was) a couple of wild storms in the early part of the season, some lucky rain fall events, record heat – which at the time we thought was going to be very negative.

“As it turned out it was the best thing that ever happened. Two or 3 very timely large rain fall events in January brought home for us an absolute record crop.

“We would like to think we could do it again – all but a 4 bale average rain grown for the farm was an outstanding result.”

Monsanto Australia’s Managing Director, Daniel Kruithoff, said that the Cameron’s commitment to experimenting and planning has been crucial to their success.

“I have known the Cameron’s for many years and I have always been impressed by their willingness to try new things to get the best from their land.

“Their approach to conducting soil tests at regular intervals across their farm has allowed them to pinpoint what nutrients are required and where with great accuracy.

“The Cameron’s also plan up to two years in advance which helps them maximise their yields and carefully manage their soil which is so important to a dryland system,” Mr Kruithoff said.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Awards, which recognise excellence and achievement in Australia’s cotton industry throughout the supply chain, from growers and ginners to product suppliers, consultants, agronomists and researchers.

“Monsanto has been a long time supporter of these awards which showcase the talent and passion in Australia’s cotton industry.

“The rapid adoption of new technology and crop management practices has underpinned the cotton industry’s success, led by growers such as the Cameron’s,” Mr Kruithoff said.

The Cameron’s were also awarded the highest yield in a CSD variety trial by CSD. CSD described the outcome as “an excellent result from a field well prepared for dryland cotton. The combination of elite cotton varieties, excellent management and a near ideal growing season with minimal periods of either severe soil moisture stress or water logging peak flowering and boll fill culminated in producing a very impressive yield result, 15.5 b/ha in the plant row (single skip).”
